Pope Benedict XVI on Saturday appointed as the Vatican's new sex crimes prosecutor a priest who handled clergy sexual abuse cases in the Roman Catholic Church in Boston at the height of the scandal and for years afterward.

Joanne Murphy knew something was unusual when she opened up an old Bible last week. The holy book turned up among the tens of thousands of materials donated to the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library each year.

A Bible signed by 30 players from the 1953 Pittsburgh Pirates, and manager Fred Haney, sits in the Sacramento shop of book restorer Joanne Murphy this week months after being donated to the Friends of the Sacramento Public Library.

Hundreds of Catholic faithful made their way before a traveling statue of Our Lady of Fatima on Thursday to offer up personal prayers, but also some for the world.

The Rev. Miguel Betancourt, a retired Catholic priest, prays Thursday afternoon alongside the statue of Our Lady of Fatima during its visit to Holy Cross Parish in West Sacramento. Betancourt was in Spain in 1947 when the statue first started touring the world. It will be available for viewing until noon today at Holy Cross Parish.

Continuing its push to add secular degrees to its theological offerings, Rocklin's William Jessup University will make its first foray into the sciences by offering a biology degree this spring.

William Jessup University, which relocated from San Jose to Rocklin in 2004, is a four-year university offering a liberal-arts education with 13 degree programs. The 125-acre campus has 175,000 square feet of classrooms, a library, administrative offices, a bookstore and residence halls.
