As his supporters whimpered softly in the audience, a Catholic priest appeared before a Sacramento judge Friday and was formally charged with seven counts of child molestation.

The message may be the same, but the way it is delivered has certainly changed as large churches produce more elaborate Christmas productions every year. Sacramento-area churches are staging Christmas shows that often include large casts, theatrical lighting and music, and special guests.

On June 16, as the sun beat down on a Bahamas beach, honeymooners Victor and Crystal Rodriguez strapped on their harnesses and parasailed above the ocean. Moments later, the life they had planned together snapped.

Victor Rodriguez, 23, lost his wife in June when they were parasailing together on the last day of their honeymoon in the Bahamas and suddenly fell approximately 200 feet. Victor, who was badly injured, has been slowly rebuilding his life.

On July 23, 1992, Thomas Paniccia, an Air Force sergeant, announced he was gay on national television. On the anniversary of that day 15 years later, Paniccia drove to an undeveloped cul-de-sac in Roseville several blocks from his home and waited to die.

Thomas Paniccia, who earned multiple commendations in the U.S. Air Force, announced he was gay in 1992 in a challenge to the military's "don't ask, don't tell" rule. Fifteen years later, to the day, he committed suicide.

David Larson, above, rented a room to Tom Paniccia and was his friend. Paniccia, who was expelled from the Air Force when he revealed he was gay, committed suicide 15 years later. Larson says Paniccia was conflicted over his homosexuality and his religious views.
